The German Alpine Club is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year. When it was founded in Vienna in 1869, the association focused mainly on Austrian territory. Today it is one of the world’s largest mountain sports clubs as well as an important sports and nature conservation association with around 1.3 million members. Mountain sports such as hiking, mountaineering, climbing, touring skiing or mountain biking are supported, but especially the safety of the athletes and the associated professional advice. In the mountains, the DAV is a major contributor to the infrastructure of huts, climbing facilities and paths and, as a nature conservation organisation, is actively committed to the preservation of alpine habitats. In order to effectively support and communicate the extensive activities of the association, Thomas Bucher, head of the DAV public relations department, and his team chose PressFile.

ERP-CRM replaced

As head of the department, Bucher organizes the holistic press work of the German Alpine Club. His tasks include setting up explicit mailinglists, maintaining contacts, answering various enquiries, as well as sending individual press releases or organising press conferences. In addition to the core tasks of PR, “we also supervise social media as well as parts of the DAV website, as well as about 120 publications a year – from the annual report to brochures to the individual press release,” he describes his field of activity. “Before we discovered PressFile for the PR organization, we used ‘Navision’ – a Microsoft ERP system. However, the software was or is simply not built for the purposes of press work, and so our core tasks in PR were extremely cumbersome, such as distribution maintenance. For this reason, we set out to find a special organizational tool for PR, which simplifies the work around distribution and contact maintenance in particular,” Bucher continues.

PressFile offers the right software for the PR of the DAV

In Order to provide significant support for public relations, the communications team opted for PressFile’s PR software in May 2015. In advance, the team defined the necessary features that the future PR CRM must bring: “We have got a solution that is easy and easy to use – a press information sending and contact maintenance tool without much frills. In addition, a cloud-based PR software with direct connection to our home email was not very widespread at that time and a huge advantage for our communication. With PressFile, we were no longer able to send press releases only from the workplace, but on the go,” Thomas Bucher summarizes the advantages of PressFile. In direct comparison with the competition, it turned out that PressFile offers all the crucial functions that still meet the requirements of the association to this day. “PressFile convinced us with its holistic cost-performance package,” Bucher continues.

PR & Public Relations is much more efficient

The DAV communication department uses PressFile for communication management around the sending of press releases as well as for maintaining contacts and setting up press distributors. “PressFile is easy to understand on the one hand and on the other hand, the software offers interesting possibilities for creating individual distributors. PressFile also offers a very good filter function. For example, in follow-ups, we can easily select editors or journalists in the mailing list based on individual criteria. This way, we avoid unnecessary emails that might even deter our audience.” With PressFile, the organisation of public relations of the German Alpine Association will be made more efficient and much easier to use. Especially the processing with regard to the creation of new contacts as well as the distribution assignment have changed for the better and can be implemented much faster. In addition to a low training effort to operate the software, Thomas Bucher and his team are also very satisfied with PressFile’s targeted customer service. “In the case of rare complications, we have always been advised quickly and well. PressFile support quickly resolves individual software problems and delivers optimal solutions in a short period of time. In the event of an imminent personnel change, for example, the PressFile team immediately ensures changes in the PR CRM system. The service is really fast and there hasn’t been a situation where we haven’t received a binding response,” Bucher added.

Would you recommend PressFile?

“Yes, I already have! In summary, PressFile is clever, simple and user-friendly. With fast and correct training, it works with distribution maintenance and mailing management,” says Bucher.

The German Alpine Club e.V.:

As early as 1869, German and Austrian mountaineers founded the German Alpine Club as an “educational mountaineering club”. To date, the DAV has grown into the largest mountain sports club in the world and one of the largest sports and nature conservation associations in Germany with 1,289,641 members in 356 independent sections and a foundation. Here hikers, sport climbers, conservationists, hut hosts, family groups, ski mountaineers, expedition participants and culture lovers will find like-minded people. It combines not only the joy of the movement in nature and the desire for summit experiences, but also the common goal of preserving the unique mountain world for future generations. In addition to political and ideological independence, the DAV, a voluntary association, counts above all the great professional competence in all areas of alpinism.
